The focus of computer use in kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade is on the basics. They learn to:

  • Use a mouse and keyboard
  • Listen to and follow directions
  • Use basic computer terminology
  • Open and quit programs properly
  • Apply basic Internet safety
  • Navigate the Internet
  • Strengthen academic development is various subject areas
  • Use a variety of application programs: word processing, paint/draw

Students work to use two hands and more than one finger while keyboarding. They also learn to only use their thumbs on the spacebar, and to use the shift keys for capital letters.

The focus of computer use in 3rd grade is to introduce a variety of application software programs and to use computers independently for learning and to demonstrate knowledge. The goal is to:

  • Lay a foundation for the development of ethical, moral, and safe computer use
  • Learn to use and care for hardware properly
  • Develop the use of home row keys for touch keyboarding
  • Strengthen academic development through use of software programs
  • Use application programs like word processing, paint/draw, presentation and spreadsheet to demonstrate knowledge
  • Develop basic visual literacy awareness for presentations
  • Use the Internet to locate information
  • Develop a foundation for using technology as a problem-solving and decision-making tool

The focus of computer use in 4th grade is to introduce a variey of software and continue to develop independent use of computers. The goal is to:

  • Foster ethical, moral, and safe computer use
  • Learn to use and care for hardware properly
  • Introduce basic hardware and software troubleshooting skills
  • Build an awareness of the uses of technology in society
  • Use touch keyboarding regularly
  • Strengthen academic development through use of software programs
  • Use application programs like word processing, paint/draw, presentation and spreadsheet to demonstrate knowledge
  • Develop visual literacy awareness for presentations
  • Develop basic Internet research skills
  • Explore uses for technology as a problem-solving and decision-making tool

  • Develop speed and accuracy in touch keyboarding
  • Strengthen academic development through use of software programs
  • Use application programs like word processing, paint/draw, presentation and spreadsheet t to demonstrate knowledge
  • Demonstrate visual literacy awareness in presentations
  • Develop Internet research skills
  • Explore uses for using technology as a problem-solving and decision-making tool

Starting with 6th Grade, the focus on technology use changes slightly. The focus is less on how to use computers and more on when to use them as a learning tool. Computer use is incorporated into subject area assignments. Some 6th grade objectives are:

  • To use computers ethically and safely
  • To understand the many uses for technology in society
  • To be able to use basic software programs like word processing, database, spreadsheet, graphic design, and web page creation to complete academic assignments
  • To create and present electronic presentations
  • To effectively and efficiently use the Internet as a reference and research tool
  • To use technology as a tool for problem-solving and decision-making

7th Grade continues the focus on technology use as a way to further learning. The focus is not so much on how particular programs work and more on which programs to use to complete a given task. Computer use is incorporated into subject area assignments. Some 7th grade objectives are:

  • To use computers ethically and safely
  • To understand the many uses for technology in society
  • To be able to use basic software programs like word processing, database, spreadsheet, graphic design, and web page creation to complete academic assignments
  • To create and present electronic presentations
  • To effectively and efficiently use the Internet as a reference and research tool

8th Grade's focus is on becoming proficient at using computers as a tool for learning. Computers are used to complete various class assignments. Some 8th grade objectives are:

  • To use computers ethically and safely
  • To understand the many uses of technology in society
  • To be able to use basic software programs like word processing, database, spreadsheet, graphic design, and web page creation to complete academic assignments
  • To create and present electronic presentations
  • To effectively and efficiently use the Internet and other information databases as reference and research tool
  • To explore how computers developed through history
